Let’s sit down and take a look at Batman the Animated Series Episode 24 Fear of Victory. Jonathan Crane, better known as the Scarecrow returns, with a nefarious scheme to drum up some extra money for his experiments in the nature of true fear. Things get a bit crazy when Robin is exposed to the fear powder, which causes people to experience true horrors when their adrenaline is pumping. The Scarecrow’s scheme in this episode was a rather genius one when you think about it. He has a bit of his fear gas left and needs more. So he utilizes a powdered form and sends them to Gotham City sports stars powdered to telegrams that posed as fan letters. The said athletes inhale the powder, which doesn’t have any side effects until they are playing. Then the adrenaline gets pumped up and then they start breaking out, as that’s what kicks in the trace amounts of the fear toxins.

Meanwhile, Scarecrow bets against the teams of the athlete that he drugged and makes a killing. Scientific experiments the scope of the Scarecrow’s don’t come cheap, as chemicals can be costly, so obviously gambling is an alternative to a figure like the Scarecrow. Simply fix the games using a little fear powder and cash in.

Scarecrow had a slight redesign in this episode as well, from his first appearance all the way back in Episode 3: Fear of Victory. And it is so much better to say the very least. He looks more like…well a scarecrow and not someone with a bag on his head.

The events of this episode are set into motion when Dick Grayson or Robin, gets a little whiff of the fear powder. Until he is in the midst of a battle with thugs with Batman and then he gets terrified of heights. Batman is resourceful enough to save himself, but Batman could have been flattened.
Batman testing out the fear powder on cats, to see what it did, oh boy, I bet that got the network some letters.

Scarecrow taking out the thug who tried to strong arm him after he won so many bets with the fear powder induced telegram was brilliant as well. And he did escape Arkham Asylum, which if I’m recalling correctly that’s the first time in this series someone’s escaped this revolving door. But it most certainly will not be the last. Especially with Scarecrow but we’ll get there in a few episodes. Nice Joker cameo in this episode by the way.

The plans for Scarecrow to fix the really big game is foiled by Batman and Robin. Which Scarecrow reacts about as well as you would really think. By dropping a vial of the fear powder right into the stadium and thus causing everyone going crazy with fear as people at sports games are pumped up in adrenaline. Robin conquers his fears and saves the day, and the Scarecrow is put back in Arkham.
