Young Justice Episode 31 Beneath Review

Episode Summary

In this episode, Miss Martian, Bumblebee, Batgirl, and Wondergirl head over to Bialya, to investigate. There appears to be a scheme with runaways involving Queen Bee, with Psimon(believed to be brain dead due to his last battle with Miss Martian), Shimmer, Mammoth, Devastation, and Icicle Jr doing the grunt work.

Batgirl gets captured, as we have a battle between the forces of good and evil. The shipment of runaways appears to be brought down but as always, the Light has a backup plan, with another group of runaways.

In the subplot of this episode, a friend of Jaime Reyes, the Blue Beetle, named Tai has run away. His mother's boyfriend, a shady fellow named Maurice, is believed to be behind the crime, but as it turns out, all he's been doing is bootlegging DVDs and video games. As we see, Tai was amount the runaways that got captured by Queen Bee and her mysterious associate.

Episode Review

This episode, was just one of those episodes that I feel will be better when you stack it up against the entire season as a whole, as oppose to just standing on its own two feet. There's nothing wrong for it per say, but it was just something that I watched, didn't feel it was a waste of time, but I moved on with my life.

After last week's episode, it is just as well, as we needed a bit of a breather. I think that there were some moments of great action and character development for the team this week.

The highlight of this episode was the trigger happy scrab in the Blue Beetle subplot. And some not so subtle undertones that this Maurice guy is obviously an abusive d-bag. "He's just having a bad day" is always a buzzword for the battered, the abused. Of course, he won't get what he deserves for that, but he'll sure get busted for piracy.

There's some kind of lesson about society's priorities but I'll leave it up to an exercise to each individual person to figure out what that lesson is.

Psimon's obviously poor track record against Miss Martian was well noted and nice callback to the last time we saw Icicle Jr, who does not take scorn too well.

The mystery partner in crime is alluded at but no doubt we're going to have fun guessing for at least a few more episode.

And Longshadow, obviously a tip of the hat to the Apache Chief expy in JLU. Which was an appreciated reference.

Let's give this the standard baseline rating of 7/10. Not too bad but really this is one that may come across as a lot better later on.
