Batman the Animated Series Episode 19 Prophecy of Doom

It is now time to take a look at Batman the Animated Series Episode 19 Prophecy of Doom. In this episode, several millionaires are scammed due to a con artist known as Nostromos who claims that they need to put money into a trust fund to prepare for some great disaster, using alleged “psychic visions” and sabotage to help further along his claim. Can Batman unravel his plan before he scams all of Gotham City’s elite out of their money? Batman the Animated Series Episode 19 Prophecy of Doom aired on FOX on October 6th 1992.

Batman the Animated Series Episode 19 Prophecy of Doom.

In the real world, there are many scam artists who use prophecies of doom and gloom to fleece people out of money. People, being the gullible creatures that we are, tend to buy their words. If someone says the world is going to end on a certain day for exactly, humanity, being the blithering idiots that we can be, tend to take that at face value. Not thinking out of that logically.

Now Nostromos did seem to have a pretty good plan put together. He spread his doom and gloom to people. Yet there were skeptics and each one of these skeptics suffered a horrific and brutal but non lethal accident, where they have seen the light. And that really is the cause of the matter. To get in closer, Batman, under his real identity Bruce Wayne, looks like he is trapped into the ability.

This episode tends to be rather transparent in many ways. Pretty much it is rather obvious that Nostromos is a con artist, no two ways about it. So that takes a bit of the starch out of the story. He did use some interesting tricks to really make people think that he was the real deal, but in reality, he’s just a master of trickery and fraud.

Of course, he does go an extra mile. Kidnapping someone’s daughter and threatening to crush her unless the guy signs all of his possessions over, for the greater good of course, that is the height of rather being low. Thankfully Batman saves the day, as Batman tends to do and both Nostromos and his henchman Lucas are taken off to prison. Yet they could have committed high fraud and people believed them. Had they not gotten just a tiny bit too greedy, they could have made out like kings. Instead, they got show down by the Bat.

Bruce Wayne makes a great point, as the fault is within the people in a way for blindly following these con artists without thinking logically. What Nostromos did was rather seedy but really it is transparent in a number of ways.

A middle of the road episode, that I’ll have to give a 5/10 rating. Not the worst but not the best. It’s not one I would go out of my way to see but at the same time, it’s not an episode that I would go out of my way not to see. You can watch Batman the Animated Series Episode 19 Prophecy of Doom on the Batman the Animated Series Volume 1 DVD or Batman the Animated Series Complete collection.
