Villain of the Day is Doctor Octopus

Welcome to a new feature on Geekapoolza, called Villain of the Day. We all love comic book villains, because they make our heroes look rather heroic and without them, their stories would not rather be rather engaging. On Villain of Day, I will briefly discuss a villain who is popping up in a story recently whether it be a big event comic book, an episode of an animated cartoon, or even on some instances a movie. Today's villain of a day, due to his role in the upcoming Ends of the Earth Comic Book Event from Marvel, would be Doctor Octopus.

Doctor Octopus A Recurring Enemy of Spider-Man Since 1963.

For nearly fifty years, Doctor Octopus has been showing up in Spider-Man stories, ever since his very first appearance in Amazing Spider-Man #3 in July 1963. Real name Otto Gunther Octavius, Doctor Octopus has been a menacing threat, with many looks, and many key stories. He formed the villainous Sinister Six, with Mysterio, Kraven the Hunter, the Vulture, Sandman, and Electro on the first Spider-Man Annual and very nearly married Peter Parker's Aunt May, even if it was just a scheme to get his hands on a nuclear plant.

Perhaps one of the most frustrating things for Doctor Octopus is he had Spider-Man's identity as Peter Parker in his grasp, and discounted him as nothing but a punk kid. When Spider-Man unmasked himself during the Civil War, Doctor Octopus was none too happy to see that he had Spider-Man and didn't take him seriously. Of course, the One More Day Magic Devil Demon Retcon of Doom caused that point to be moot but it was the thought that counted.

Doctor Octopus was a complex villain, sometimes working for a greater good and other times working towards a thirst for vengeance and blood lust against Spider-Man. Needless to say, Ock's motivations could be all over the board, depending on the writer. Some of Ock's most memorable stories had been during the 1970s and 1980s, but he has had his moments since then.

Like most villains of Spider-Man at one time or another, Doctor Octopus died and was replaced by another, lesser quality version, that being his student Carolyn Trainer as the new Doctor Octopus or Lady Octopus. The death like man in comic books did not stick and Doc Ock was back in the saddle rather quickly, returning with a vengeance.

In recent storylines, it has been revealed that the years have caught up with Doctor Octopus and he is on the verge of dying. But Ock is not ready to give up yet and that means doom and disaster for Spider-Man. The latest Marvel Comic Books event(with Marvel every comic book seems to be an event), the Ends of the Earth, starting with Amazing Spider-Man 682 will be the latest attempt of Doctor Octopus to gain some vengeance. This has been the Doctor Octopus storyline we've been waiting for 50 years. Whether or not that is true, we're just going to have to wait and see.
