Nightwing Volume 2 Issue 25 “The Boys” Review
This comic book was released in October 1998, with Chuck Dixon as the writer, Scott McDaniel the penciller, Karl Story the inker, Roberta Tewes the Colorist, Jamison the separator, John Costanza as the letterer, Darren Vincenzo as associate editor, and Scott Peterson as the editor. This was the twenty fifth issue of the Nightwing Comic Volume 2, which was released by DC Comics from October 1996 Through April 2009.
There are certain comic book issues that are designed as jumping on points for casual fans who might just be picking up a comic book to get into. This issue of the Nightwing comic is one of those jumping on issues. We have Nightwing(Dick Grayson) and Robin(Tim Drake) doing a training exercise, blindfolded, as they have a nice little discussion.
A nice little discussion that brings both characters up to speed and also the readers up to speed what is happening, while blindfolded. Granted, if I was a long time reader, I would have been annoyed with the exposition but as someone who is jumping into the comics just as blind as the characters who are blindfolded, then it was more than fine.
The discussion of Nightwing’s screwed up past relationships were most illuminating, but you do know that Batman has got everyone schooled and beat with his past relationships with women. So we have a nice training exercise, token fight scene, but honestly this was just a pure jumping on issue. Although the next issue of Nightwing seems interesting, but we’ll see if that one was in the box.
Advertisements can be a fun part of the comic book but they were more interesting the later you go back. We have an advertisement for the latest Halloween Movie, Halloween H20 in this issue. Also, a video game for the latest game from the World Wrestling Federation, War Zone for the N64. Which I remember being okay, but obviously not the best game.
Overall this was a rather solid read. I wouldn’t recommend going out of your way to pick up this old comic book issue, but if you see it floating around in a back issue bin, a garage sale, or on Ebay, I wouldn’t run away from it either. I rate it a perfectly acceptable comic book.
