There are two major metrics which can make or break any kind of comic book. The actual writing of the story and also the artwork within. Both of these played well can really make a rather good story. However which one is more important?
What is More Important The Comic Book Artwork or the Comic Book Writing
Comic Books can in fact live and die on the art work. When the artwork is so bad that its flaws can be spotted by an untrained eye, then there is a little bit of a problem. For instance, you can have the best Spider-Man comic book from a writing standpoint but if Spider-Man is off model in most of the panels, then there is a disconnection.
So art work is rather the first thing that people notice and can distract many readers from a mediocre story. Of course the fact that it can distract us from a mediocre story is only something that works to a slight extent. If the writing is so bad, only the art work can save it so much.
Bad writing and bad art work is pretty much the kiss of death for the fan interest in a comic book. Having either of of the art work or the writing be bad on a comic book will be something that will be a turn off but having both be awful is rather work.
Good writing and good art work is a sight to behold and really is the work of a team. Sadly, it does seem like that very fact can be a crap shoot, with many times one or the other suffering.
We are in a time where comic books have a little less substance and have reached the era where it is all about big events with mass produced issues, forcing fans to dig into their pocket to get all of the pieces of the story. Art work and story can be decent but it can often take a backseat with these huge event comic books.
