Young Justice Episode 33 Depths Review

This is an episode where I cannot make this point clearer. There will be spoilers, big spoilers, as this is a rather important episode. Be warned as this review contains spoilers for Young Justice Season 2 Episode 7 Depths.

So once again, spoilers be warned for Young Justice Episode 33 Depths, the latest episode of Young Justice: Invasion

Episode Summary

We kick things off with G. Gordon Godfrey talking about the space com satellite being lauched by Ferris Aircraft, while questioning the intentions.

Artemis prepares to return to the world of super hero, which Wally doesn't approach of. The former Kid Flash seems unhappy, but Artemis quips asking what the worst is that could happen. We cut to a scene seemingly in the future, where Artemis is dead, despite Nightwing's best attempts to revive.

The team prepares to protect against the com link satellite as Artemis reunites with the team. Artemis, Lagoon Boy, Nightwing, Superboy, and Miss Martian will be on the mission to guard the space com satellite launched by Ferris Aircraft. There is a lot of underlying tension between Superboy and Lagoon Boy, for obvious reasons, and it bubbles during this episode.

It comes to light, the reasons that Superboy and Miss Martian broke up, given M'gann's abuse of her telepathy and rendering her victims in a catatonic state. Superboy says that she is no better than Psimon, which was a low blow.

The mission goes not so well on many accounts. A team of villains, lead by Kaldur, the former Aqualad, attacks trying to sabotage the satellite. Lagoon Boy gets captured. The satellite is blown up and the worst thing is that Artemis has been killed by Kaldur.

As the team is in mourning, things are not what they seemed, as Nightwing meets Wally in a factory, but Kaldur shows up, as does Artemis. It was a bit of trickery between the four to gain the trust of Kaldur's biological father Black Manta and get an in towards the light. Artemis is given a charm that was made by Zatanna to make her look like a different person to anyone but those four. As they hope that one day they are going to forgive what they are given.

Episode Review

I have a feeling this episode is going to lead to a rather polarizing response on the Internet for any number of reasons. However I enjoyed it and it had a lot of twists and answered some questions.

The death of Artemis was something that has been speculated that was going to happen since the beginning of Season 1. It was teased and was rather convincing. Although you could tell in hindsight that it was set up but for a minute, they had you going. Just for a moment and really that is the mark of a good cartoon.

Now granted, some say they might have overplayed their hand with a couple of death fake outs and the scene at the end.

G. Gordon Godfrey is such a character where you just love to hate him. He is every obnoxious news journalist that you want to just reach through the television and strangle but he makes some points that would make people stop and think. Which makes him such a gloriously hate able character. Especially if you know his backstory.

The trickery between Miss Martian and Superboy to make people believe that the Martian Manhunter and Superman were still on Earth, well done. Along with Superboy's distaste of everything.

Romance, the insanity that can cause a vast degree of headaches. Granted, I feel like we've taken about five steps back with the romance during this season in some respects. And Superboy is completely justified with breaking up with Miss Martian and obviously her power abuse may come back to haunt everyone.

The bit with Aqualad, yeah, I suppose you could see that he was playing for the other team a ruse. I do look forward to the drama when it comes out what Aqualad, Kid Flash, Artemis, and Nightwing did and the ruse they pulled. Especially when everyone realizes that Artemis didn't die and Aqualad didn't turn evil. Although knowing the Light, you just wonder if they have a good idea what these four are up to.
