Green Lantern the Animated Series Episode 9 In Love and War

It is now time to review the latest episode of Green Lantern the Animated Series, in Love in War. As always there will be spoilers, so be warned.

Episode Summary

We begin this episode of the usual crew, of Hal Jordan, Kilowog, Aya, and Razer continuing their journeys in space. Kilowog is despondent based off of the events of the last episode. The team comes across a giant space monster which they fight, with help of the Star Sapphire Corps.

The Star Sapphires are a group much like the Green or Red Lanterns, only instead of their rings being fueled by will power or rage, their rings are fueled by the emotion of love. As we find out, love can rather be a twisted ring, as Kilowog finds out.

When Hal Jordan seems to not fall under the influence that easily, the Star Sapphires send a power ring to Carol Ferris. At first, Carol appears to be overjoyed but then it turns to dismay and then a form of outrage, as she attacks Hal. With a kiss, she manages to shake off the power of the Star Sapphire ring.

The rest of the team gets off of the planet, but obviously the Star Sapphire Corps have a lot to learn about the true nature of love. Whether they will learn it or not, the question will remain but the war rages on for our team, as the Red Lanterns prepare for their invasion.

General Thoughts on This Episode

I'll say this much right here. You could really make an argument that the Star Sapphires may be more twisted than the Red Lantern Corps. Hate is hate, no matter how much you think about it. Rather a misinterpretation of love can mean a lot more trouble then pure hatred.

The Star Sapphire outfits were meant very much for fan service I think. Granted, you can't go nearly as far as you might in the comic books.

Again we have the syndrome of another race of people not being what they seem. Not that means it was a bad episode, but this show does have a formula.

As much flak as I tend to give the Guardians in these reviews and as much flak as I will give the Guardians in future reviews, perhaps they were in the right just this once not to let emotions rule them.

Yes Aya's robot form was based off of Razer's dead lover. Granted, it was not something that meant harm but things might be just a slight bit awkward.

There was a very poignant message about the nature of love in this episode. A lesson that I'm not sure will stick and really something that many men and women twist all of the time.

Summary and Rating

Overall, I think I'll just default to my standard 7/10, which seems to be what I give a lot of episodes that didn't blow me away, but I didn't really hate either. If you missed this episode, you can watch Green Lantern the Animated Series on Sunday Morning at 10:00 AM Eastern Time and brand new episodes each and every Saturday Morning at 10:00 AM as part of the DC Nation.
