Young Justice Episode 27 Happy New Year aired for the first time on Cartoon Network as part of the DC Nation Animated Block on April 28th 2012. A lot has happened in the last five years and we are in a world where the team has new members, and where aliens are something that people fear beyond all else. Can the League and the Team deal with all of the backlash from the missing sixteen hours five years previously.
Young Justice Episode 27 Happy New Year
This is Young Justice Season 2 Episode 1, Part of Young Justice: Invasion. As always there will be some spoilers.
Episode Summary
We have a brief bit at the end of the last episode with the missing sixteen hours, then we have Superboy and Miss Martian fighting Clayface in a re-match of sorts, with Clayface, being beaten.
As it turns out, five years have passed, where there are all new team members and things have changed. The Dick Grayson version of Robin is now Nightwing and Tim Drake is Robin. The New Robin, Beast Boy, Lagoon Boy, the Blue Beetle, Batgirl, Wondergirl, Bumblebee, and Mal Duncan are all on the team. Zatanna and Rocket have joined the Justice League, with Aqualad, Kid Flash, and Artemis not appearing in this episode, but Superboy and Miss Martian are on the team, but apparently no longer dating as Miss Martian is in a relationship with Lagoon Boy.
Lobo shows up and appears to be attacking a Senator, but it turns out to be piloted by an alien. This makes people wonder who else could be aliens among us with the flames being fanned by G. Gordon Godfrey and the Justice League is not responsive.
After Adam Strange fills them in, they go on the mission but there is still much to be done, as the damage the League has done has lead to aliens apparently putting their focus on Earth. And humans are fearful of anyone not like them.
Episode Review
I don't normally advocate a long hiatus from a show, but in this case, given that we seem to be thrown into an entirely new world in a week our time, even if five years have passed in the time for those characters in the show.
As you can see in the above summary, a lot has happened. Granted, I'm going to reserve most of my judgment until more episodes air. It just seemed like this show during the end of the last season took a few steps forward and the characterization of the team was rather spot on, with the show hitting on all cylinders.
Then there an entirely new team, with new members, barely any of them really getting all that much time to shine. As the season goes on, I'm confident that they will. And there were a few moments of supreme "WTF" in during this episode of Young Justice.
I thought the only new member that got a decent amount of characterization of the team was Blue Beetle.
So G. Gordon Godfrey, if he answers to who he answers to in the comic book, he's going to be nothing but trouble.
Lobo was kind of just meh in this episode, compared to the DCAU but perhaps that was an unfair comparison to make.
Episode Rating and Final Thoughts
I really don't want to give this episode a rating, as while I don't think technically speaking it was bad, but it was rather jarring. I just hope the time jump does not cause this show to time jump the shark but with the toy line on shaky ground, the future might not be bright. I'll give this episode a rating of inconclusive, barring watching future episode. If you missed it, you can watch Young Justice Episode 27 Happy New Year on Cartoon Network On Demand and more episodes every week on Cartoon Network as part of the DC Nation.
