It is now time to reach right into the Random Comic Book Box of Doom™ and pull out another X-Men Black Sun Issue #1 from November 2000, entitled “First Spell: Skin the Cat”. In this comic book issue, Kitty Pryde is at the mercy of Belasco, who intends to steal her soul.

X-Men Black Sun Issue #1 Review from November 2000

This issue of X-Men was released by Marvel Comics in November 2000. It was written by Chris Claremont, penciled by Thomas Derenick, Inked by Sean Parsons, Colored by Tom Smith, with Pop Visuals on the letters, and edited by Mike Marts.

Well this should be the start of something interesting. This was a bit of a mind screw issue in many ways. You thought something that was going to happen, but they you didn’t think that something was happening. Oh look, Kitty is safe with the X-Men, ah crap those are not the X-Men, those are demons.

I find this to be a mostly engaging read and at the same times, kind of confusing if you don’t know the backstory of a lot of the X-Men prior to this point. It is not completely confusing if you are a new reader and I am just rather kind of in tune with the X-Men canon more than most.

Belasco was planning the events of this issue for an extremely long time. Well he does exercise a supreme amount of patience. As a result, he is going to achieve his claims through Kitty Pryde due to her being pure. Sure whatever you say.

This is the 25th Anniversary of the Giant Sized X-Men that made them the household names that they are and Claremont being a part of this is fitting, continuing that he was a big part. Of course, later Claremont can be rather dodgy and patchy.

The end with Magik showing up was an interesting twist, although this is the second Magik, that being Amanda Sefton and not Illyana Rasputin. Of course, that is only made clear to the eagle eye readers but if you don’t know the mythos, you might find yourself wondering, “what did I just read.”

This is a five part, so it stands to reason it is one of those things that is meant to be read back to back to back. First issue seemed like a rather breezy read and I’ll reserve judgment for the rest of the arc until I have read the rest of the arc. Revolutionary thinking, I know.
