Avengers Earth's Mightiest Heroes
Episode 52 Avengers Assemble Review
The following
review contains spoilers for Avenges Earth's Mightiest Heroes Episode
52 Avengers Assemble.
Episode Synopsis
As Iron Man
ponders the legacy of the Avengers with Captain America and their
place in history, Terrax, a herald of Galactus showed up. Three more
heralds show up, with Terrax handily thrashing the Avengers easily.
The Avengers realize that this battle is not going to be coming easy,
so they call in some added help, of pretty much every super hero that
appeared in the series.
The teams split up
and engaged the heralds of Galactus and the big man himself. An
attack by Yellowjacket does nothing other than riling up Galactus.
The heralds are defeated and the machines are destroyed, but Galactus
rebuilds them and begins his consumption of the planet, as the
moments continue to tick down.
Thor shows up, to
engage Galactus, allowing Iron Man and Mr. Fantastic to construct a
portal, sending Galactus to the Negative Zone, to feast on all of the
anti-matter that he wants. Galactus is sealed right in forever, as
the Earth has been saved right thanks to the Avengers. In many ways,
that is their legacy, they saved the world from Galactus.
Episode Review
This finale wasn't
necessarily bad, but it just seemed like a mess in many ways. We
threw every single hero in the mix, whether or not it made sense for
them to be there or not. And many of them with the exception of
Spider-Man, Mr. Fantastic, and the Human Torch did not get speaking
roles, other than the major team.
So yeah I've seen
comparisons for both the finale of Justice League Unlimited and the
finale of X-Men Evolution elsewhere online for this one and I can see
both of them. The JLU finale really was a rushed ending to an
otherwise great show I think. And really, this episode highlighted a
problem that has been happening with these last twelve or so
episodes.
Really bad pacing.
Villain is
defeated within the last three minutes, which includes about the
minute or so you need. I think I've said a few times that episodes
could be a lot better when grounded out to a two part episode.
Now don't get me
wrong, there was some rather decent action in this episode. And
really Galactus was a menacing threat, and didn't speak, which added
to his menace. The solution to send him to the Negative Zone was
practical.
In the end, this
is it for Avengers Earth's Mightiest Heroes. Interesting enough, this
episode was titled Avengers Assemble, which is the name of the new
cartoon in the works with the Avengers. Will it deliver? We'll have
to wait and see.
Now, obviously
either plans changed for this season or another season was intended
for some point, but Surtur is still kind of out there and not wrapped
up. Free word of advice to any future cartoon makers. While long term
planning is great and all, do not get too ambitious and plan out too
far, because the Network or other executives from higher up will cut
you off at the knees. Or some kind of legal issue or something or
other.
Granted perhaps
we'll see the Surtur story arc conclude. And let's face it, we
introduce Beta Ray Bill and only see him once.
Bringing it back
around to Galactus, this episode felt like a finale but at the same
time was kind of underwhelming. This was an awesome show but it is
just like someone tripped just right before they reached home base
after knocking one out of the park. They nearly hit the mark, but not
quite.
In the end,
Avengers Earth's Mightiest Heroes will hopefully be remembered as a
great cartoon that did the Avengers justice. It will have a strong
cult following at the very least and every Avengers cartoon that
comes later will never measure up to a certain section of the
fanbase, much like Batman: The Animated Series and Batman Fans.
